Moscow refutes claims of Russia’s drone violating Romanian airspace
Romanian officials previously reported that a drone was detected near the border with Ukraine on Saturday. Defense Minister Ionut Mosteanu stated that two F-16 jets were deployed and nearly engaged the UAV before it turned back toward Ukraine. He added that similar incidents occur “approximately every week.”
The Russian Embassy in Romania rejected the accusations, noting that no concrete proof has been provided to confirm the drone’s origin. On September 14, Romania’s Foreign Ministry summoned Russian Ambassador Vladimir Lipaev to deliver a formal protest. After the meeting, the embassy said that “not a single specific and convincing answer was given to any question about the identification of the drone that allegedly flew into Romanian airspace.”
“Due to the lack of objective confirmation of the nationality of the aircraft, the protest of the Romanian side was rejected as far-fetched and unfounded,” the embassy added. Lipaev further suggested that “all the facts indicate that in reality there was a deliberate provocation by the Kiev regime,” implying that Ukraine aimed to draw NATO into a direct confrontation with Russia.
