Romania Feels Direct Impact as Ukraine War Spills Closer to Border
For many in the area, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine once felt distant. However, the impact of the war is now being felt directly in border regions such as Romania, where the conflict has increasingly spilled across nearby airspace.
In Galați, residents have begun returning cautiously to inspect their homes after an attack drone crashed into a residential block early Friday while people were asleep. The impact triggered a fire and widespread panic inside the building.
A visit to the site on Saturday revealed a large, jagged hole several metres wide in the roof, temporarily covered with plastic. The drone is said to have struck the lift shaft, which helped absorb part of the explosion and likely prevented more severe destruction.
The apartment directly below sustained heavy damage, and a woman and her teenage son remain in hospital with bruises and minor burns. Authorities and residents have acknowledged that the outcome could have been far worse.
One resident responsible for the building, Costel Patrichi, described the moment of the strike and the warning that preceded it. He said his phone received an alert shortly before 02:00, indicating a drone approaching from the direction of the Ukrainian border, only a few miles away. Moments later, the explosion occurred.
“It was really very terrifying,” he said, adding that the impact location may have prevented a larger disaster. “But if the drone had hit the side, it could have destroyed a whole floor or more.”
Expressing anger and concern, he also questioned local air defence readiness, saying residents had been told they were protected under NATO arrangements and should not worry, but the incident has left many feeling exposed and unsafe.
