UN Raises Alarm After Russian Drone Hits Romania

(MENAFN) The United Nations renewed concerns Monday about the risk of the Ukraine conflict extending beyond its borders after a drone that Romanian officials identified as Russian crashed into a residential building in the southeastern city of Galati, leaving two people injured.

Addressing the UN Security Council, Kayoko Gotoh, director of the Europe and Central Asia Division for the UN Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations, pointed to the incident as evidence of growing regional security risks.

"Last Friday, a dangerous incident crystallized our oft-stated warnings about the potential spillover of the war," Gotoh told council members.

According to Gotoh, the strike occurred during the night of May 28-29 when "an armed drone exploded on the top floor of a 10-story residential building in the eastern Romanian city of Galati, injuring two residents -- a woman and a child."

She noted that the event was not an isolated case, stating that Romanian airspace has been breached by armed drones on previous occasions since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Gotoh also warned that the latest crash reflects "a worrying trend of drone incursions into the airspaces and territorial waters of countries bordering either Ukraine or the Russian Federation."

The incident has intensified international concerns that the war could increasingly affect neighboring countries as cross-border drone activity continues to pose security risks across the region.
